Bitter – Public Typography
in Coffee Shops

Location: Lawrence, Kansas
Categories: Editorial Design

Bitter is a publication that explores the brand identities and typography found in three coffee shops around Lawrence, Kansas through a detailed visual and textual analysis. From signage to labels to menu design, this book dissects what makes a powerful brand identity and how typography plays a role in that.

The publication is inspired by the coffee shops themselves. The book captures the warm, inviting coffee shop atmosphere through photography while using modern typographic elements to create a unique coffee table style book that highlights these businesses. It was inspired by elements like the old brick buildings they inhabited to create grid patterns and coffee-ring stained tables.
